The Best of Norway From the Fjords to the Arctic

Most Northern Lights trips take you straight north. This one starts in Bergen and takes you through the snowy mountains and fjords around Voss before continuing to Tromsø, giving you two very different sides of Norway in one adventure.

Along the way, you'll snowshoe through winter landscapes, try skiing in Voss, meet a team of huskies and spend your Arctic nights searching for the Northern Lights. You don't need to be a skier or winter expert: just ready to get outside, try something new and experience Norway at its most spectacular.

Who Is It For?
Why Bergen, Voss & Tromsø?
Best Time to Go?

Why Choose This Northern Lights Tour in Norway?

Because there's a lot more to Norway in winter than standing outside waiting for the sky to turn green.

This trip turns a Northern Lights holiday into a journey across Norway. You'll start in Bergen, travel into the snowy mountains around Voss and experience the landscapes of Fjord Norway before flying north to Tromsø and the Arctic.  Along the way, you'll snowshoe, experience the fjords, try skiing in Voss, meet a team of huskies and spend your evenings searching for the Aurora Borealis.

It's a trip for people who want to see the Northern Lights, but don't want their entire holiday to depend on seeing them.
Even if the Aurora makes you wait, you've still had one hell of a week.

Who Is This Northern Lights Trip Designed For?

This trip is for travellers who want to experience a proper Norwegian winter without needing to be experienced skiers or hardcore winter adventurers.

It's especially good if the Northern Lights are high on your bucket list, but you also want to see more of Norway while you're here.
You don't need previous skiing experience. The ski day in Voss is beginner-friendly, making it a chance to try something new in an incredible setting rather than the focus of the whole holiday.

It's also a great fit if you're visiting Norway for the first time and can't decide between the fjords of Western Norway and the Arctic north.

From Fjord Norway to the Arctic

Norway changes dramatically as you travel north, and this trip lets you experience that contrast for yourself.

You begin in Bergen, surrounded by colourful wooden houses, mountains and the gateway to the western fjords.

From there, you travel into Voss, where winter means snow-covered mountains, frozen landscapes and days spent outside. It's here that you'll snowshoe, experience Fjord Norway in winter and get your introduction to skiing.

Then comes Tromsø. Far above the Arctic Circle, the landscape, light and atmosphere change completely. This is Northern Lights country. and the setting for Aurora hunting, dog sledding and the final chapter of your winter adventure.

When Is the Best Time for a Northern Lights Trip to Norway?

This adventure takes place during Norway's winter season, when snow transforms both Fjord Norway and the Arctic and the long northern nights create the darkness needed to see the Aurora.

Winter in Voss means snow-covered mountains and the start of ski season, while Tromsø's location above the Arctic Circle gives you the chance to experience the distinctive light, landscapes and atmosphere of Northern Norway.

Of course, the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, so no departure can guarantee an appearance.

That's exactly why we've built this trip around more than the Aurora. If the sky puts on a show, incredible. If it makes you wait, you've still spent seven days experiencing Norway in winter: from fjords and mountains to skiing, snowshoeing, huskies and the Arctic.

Still Have Questions?

IS THIS TRIP BUILT AROUND SKIING AND NORTHERN LIGHTS AS A COMBINED EXPERIENCE IN NORWAY?

Yes, this Norway trip is designed to blend skiing and chasing the Northern Lights into a single experience. Day 3 is a dedicated skiing day at Voss Resort in the fjord region, and Days 4 through 6 are dedicated to northern lights viewing in Tromsø. The trip is specifically built to combine skiing and northern lights in Norway without the need to book two separate trips.

HOW IS THIS NORWAY ITINERARY STRUCTURED ACROSS THE 7 DAYS?

This Norway itinerary runs Bergen and Voss first for skiing, then Tromsø for the Northern Lights, across a fixed seven-day route. Days 1 to 3 cover Bergen and Voss (arrival, snowshoeing, and skiing). Day 4 is the transfer to Tromsø. Days 5 and 6 are aurora and Arctic experience days. Day 7 is departure. For anyone building a Norway package of 7 days around northern lights and skiing, this covers both without any wasted days.

WHEN DOES YOUR SKI AND NORTHERN LIGHTS SEASON START AND END?

The Norway ski and Northern Lights season typically runs from early December to late April. We begin winter activities once the snow blankets the mountains, and we keep at it until the snow tapers off! Typically, this spans from early December to late April, but it's entirely up to Mother Nature! For more information on when to go, read our article on the best time to see the Northern Lights in Norway.

HAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME FOR THIS EXPERIENCE?

You'll need warm, waterproof ski layers and cold-weather gear for this Norway ski and Northern Lights trip, and we will send you a full packing list before you arrive. Before your activity, you will receive a detailed list of recommended items to bring, including appropriate clothing and gear for the activity. This typically encompasses recommended clothing and gear such as:

  • Ski jacket and pants, hardshell

  • Gloves, hat, boots

  • Woolen underlayers and socks

  • Backpack

  • Snacks & water

  • Cold-weather skin protection

DO I NEED TO BE PHYSICALLY FIT TO GO ON THIS EXPERIENCE?

Yes, you need good general fitness for the ski days on this Norway winter holiday. We suggest that all our guests have good physical health for winter activities. If you have any medical concerns but still wish to go skiing, we advise consulting with your doctor beforehand for your safety. Remember to always ski according to your own skill and fitness level.

HOW DOES THIS COMPARE TO OTHER AURORA EXPERIENCES IN TROMSØ SUCH AS AURORA 7 NORDIC EXPERIENCES?

This trip covers more of Norway than a Tromsø-only aurora tour such as Aurora 7 Nordic Experiences, since it adds fjord skiing in Voss, dog sledding, and a private Norway boat tour on top of three nights chasing the Northern Lights. Aurora 7 Nordic Experiences focuses solely on aurora-chasing. This package combines fjord skiing in Voss with three nights of aurora hunting, dog sledding, and a private boat tour in Tromsø. Travellers comparing aurora 7 Tromsø options should note: this adventure covers significantly more of Norway in a single trip.

DOES THIS EXPERIENCE CATER TO SENIORS?

Yes, this is one of our Norway tours for seniors: there's no maximum age limit, so as long as you're fit and enthusiastic, you're welcome to join. Our winter tours have no maximum age limit; as long as you're physically fit, and you are enthusiastic, you're welcome to join!

CAN I BRING MY OWN GEAR, SUCH AS SNOWSHOES, SKIS OR A HELMET?

Yes, you may bring your own snowshoes, slalom skis and helmet on this Norway ski and Northern Lights trip. When it comes to backcountry skis, you can bring your own skis if they have a touring binding that enables releasing the heel for uphill hiking using skins.

SHOULD I TIP MY GUIDE?

Tipping your guide isn't customary in Norway, as it is e.g. in the USA. Our guides put in considerable effort to ensure your experience is both enjoyable and safe, maintaining the high standards set by Outdoor Norway. While tipping is recognized as a standard practice in the industry and is always welcomed, it's never an obligation. It's entirely up to your discretion whether you choose to leave a tip. Your appreciation for the service provided is greatly valued either way.

CAN I LEAVE MY BAG/LUGGAGE AT THE BASE?

Yes absolutely, that's not an issue at all. We have shelves available for storing your belongings while you're out on a tour. Rest assured, there's always a member of our staff present at the base, so your items will be securely looked after— nothing goes missing on our watch!

DO I NEED TO SIGN A WAIVER?

Yes. Upon joining any activity on this Norway ski and Northern Lights trip, a waiver acknowledging risks must be read and signed. For minors, a parent or guardian is required to sign the waiver.

Why Outdoor Norway?
