Ski Holidays in Norway - Your Way

Resort slopes to remote backcountry, Norway has a different kind of ski trip for every level of ski skills.

Spend your days skiing lift-served runs around Voss, head beyond the resorts on a guided backcountry adventure or make skiing the centrepiece of a longer journey through Fjord Norway. For experienced skiers, guided ski touring opens up quieter terrain far beyond the marked slopes.

Not every day has to be spent on skis. Snowshoeing offers a slower way to explore the winter landscape and works particularly well as part of a multi-day ski holiday, no matter if you’re travelling with non-skiers or simply want a day away from the slopes.

What to Know Before Your Ski Holidays in Norway

Why Ski in Norway?

Why Voss and Fjord Norway?
Best Time for a Norway Ski Holiday

Big mountain days, quieter terrain and ski trips that go far beyond a single resort.

A ski holiday in Norway can mean very different things. Spend a day on the lift-served slopes around Voss, head into the backcountry with a guide or turn skiing into a multi-day journey through the mountains and fjords of Western Norway.

For experienced skiers, the real draw is what lies beyond the pistes. Guided ski touring trips in Norway open up quieter mountain terrain, changing snow conditions and routes where the journey matters as much as the descent. Prefer the resorts? Longer ski trips can link several areas together instead of keeping you on the same mountain all week.

With a guide handling routes, conditions and logistics, you spend less time planning the next move and more time skiing.

From resort skiers looking for something different to experienced skiers ready to head into the backcountry.

You don't need to be a ski tourer to start exploring Norway on skis. Some trips centre on lift-served resort skiing, while others combine resort days with guided adventures farther into the mountains. More demanding backcountry and ski touring holidays are designed for confident skiers with the experience and fitness required for the terrain.

Travelling with someone who doesn't want to ski every day? That doesn't have to dictate the whole trip. Snowshoeing offers an accessible alternative, while private trips give couples, families and groups more flexibility to accommodate different abilities and ambitions.

For experienced skiers looking for bigger objectives, a private ski trip in Norway also gives the guide more freedom to adapt the route to the group, weather and snow conditions rather than following a fixed programme.

Resorts, backcountry terrain and fjord runs beyond belief

Voss makes a natural base for skiing in Western Norway. You have lift-served terrain at Voss Resort, more skiing nearby at Myrkdalen and access to mountain terrain that extends well beyond the pistes. Go farther into Fjord Norway and a ski trip can connect different resorts, valleys and backcountry areas rather than repeating the same runs all week.

That's particularly valuable on a multi-day ski trip. One day might be spent skiing groomed runs; another heading into the backcountry with a guide; the next travelling deeper into the fjords and mountains. For experienced skiers, private and guided trips also give you more flexibility to follow the conditions instead of committing every day to a fixed mountain.

And then there's the setting. You're not just coming to Norway for the skiing. You're skiing as a way to see Norway.

Main season runs from winter into spring, but each month brings something different.

January and February are about deep winter conditions, snow-covered valleys and shorter days. March is one of our favourite months to ski: there's more daylight for longer days in the mountains while winter conditions are still well established. Depending on the location and season, skiing can continue into April and beyond.

The best time also depends on the kind of trip you're planning. Resort skiing, backcountry skiing and ski touring holidays in Norway don't always have identical ideal conditions, so dates and routes should be matched to your experience and objectives rather than chosen by the calendar alone.

For longer journeys, browse our multi-day tours to see how skiing can fit into a wider trip through Norway.

What Makes Voss Norway Skiing Different From Larger Alpine Resorts?

Skiing in Voss, NOrway combines groomed resort runs with guided backcountry access and fjord-view descents from the same base. The resort sits minutes from Voss town centre, Bergen is one hour away by direct train, and the road trip packages extend the skiing to Myrkdalen, Sogndal, and Stranda across several days.

Is Backcountry Skiing In Norway Suitable For Intermediate Skiers?

Backcountry skiing in Norway, same as anywhere else in the world, requires confidence on groomed slopes before heading into off-piste terrain.

Guided multi-day trips begin with an assessment so your guide can recommend routes that match your ability level. If you're newer to skiing, a resort-focused package is often the best starting point before progressing into backcountry terrain.

While tipping is recognized as a standard practice in the industry and is always welcomed, it's never an obligation. It's entirely up to your discretion whether you choose to leave a tip. Your appreciation for the service provided is greatly valued either way.

What Is Fjord Skiing In And How Does It Differ From Inland Mountain Skiing In Norway?

Fjord skiing in Norway combines mountain descents with views of dramatic fjords and open water below.

Unlike traditional inland ski destinations, the terrain creates a rare sea-to-summit experience. Around Voss, Myrkdalen, and Stranda, skiers can enjoy some of the country's most iconic fjord landscapes during multi-day ski trips.

What is the difference between a Norway ski holiday and a ski touring holiday?

A traditional ski holiday is usually centred on lift-served resorts and marked pistes. A ski touring holiday in Norway takes you beyond the resort, using touring equipment to travel through mountain terrain before skiing back down.

That makes ski touring much more dependent on experience, fitness, weather, snow conditions and route choice than resort skiing.

What Skiing Tours In Norway Are Available For Groups?

Outdoor Norway offers skiing tours in Norway ranging from short resort getaways in Voss to extended road trips through Myrkdalen, Sogndal, and Stranda. Private group departures are available, making these trips ideal for friends, families, clubs, and corporate groups looking to explore Norway's best ski terrain together.

Are Remote Ski Trips In Norway Available For Experienced Skiers?

Yes. Experienced skiers can join guided remote ski trips in Norway that access backcountry terrain around Voss and Myrkdalen, away from crowded resorts and groomed runs. These trips are designed for strong skiers seeking untouched snow, mountain solitude, and a more adventurous winter experience.
