Why Alta, Norway Is Made for Northern Lights Hunting
Alta sits well north of the Arctic Circle, which is why itβs a natural base for Northern Lights tours in Norway.
It is found in a stretch of Norway where the polar night strips out several hours of daylight through the winter. What makes the difference isn't just the darkness, it's what sits just outside the city: the Finnmarksvidda plateau, a stretch of open, treeless high ground where cloud cover clears faster than it does over the coast, and where there's no streetlight for miles once you're on it.
That's why this tour is built around driving rather than standing still. The plateau roads that give the darkest sky aren't always the same roads two nights running, and a guide who can read which valley is clearing tonight gets you further than a fixed platform with a nice view.

Tour Highlights
Who This Evening Suits
Anyone chasing the aurora specifically, rather than folding it into a bigger day, gets more out of this than a tour that parks once and waits. It suits couples and friends who want a proper Arctic evening with no physical activity attached, and it suits solo travellers, since the whole group moves and waits together at the guide's pace.
Families are welcome too. The minimum age is 5, with a child rate up to age 12. There's no walking route or physical task involved, so the main thing to plan for is keeping a young child warm and occupied through a few hours of driving and waiting.
What Actually Makes This a Search, Not a Viewing Tour
Most of a clear winter night on the plateau roads outside Alta is quiet. Then a gap opens in the cloud over one particular valley, and closes over the last one. The van carries 4WD and studded tyres specifically so the guide can leave paved routes and reach the stretch of plateau where that gap is actually visible, rather than watching it happen from a spot the vehicle can't leave.
One vehicle, one guide, one plateau. The value here is depth of access to that single terrain, not variety of activity.
Your Evening in Alta
The briefing
You meet your guide at Canyon Hotel, Markedsgata 6, in Alta, 15 minutes before departure. Before the van moves, the guide walks through what the aurora actually is and what tonight's forecast looks like.
Leaving the city
The drive out is short. Alta's own lights fall away within minutes, replaced by pine forest and then open plateau. This is where the guide starts working the forecast in earnest, reading which direction has the better chance tonight.
The search itself.
Most of your Alta Northern Lights tour happens here: driving to a stretch of plateau with a clear view, waiting, checking the sky, and moving on if the guide reads a better gap forming elsewhere. You'll step outside at each stop, so the thermal suit on loan is worth taking.
If the sky opens
When conditions align, the aurora shows as green light moving across the plateau sky, with none of Alta's ambient light behind it to wash it out. Warm drinks and snacks carry you through the stretches in between.
