Gargia Lodge is roughly 150 years old, and it sets up the ride before the engine starts. Your guide introduces the area's history and Arctic lifestyle here, then walks you through the controls and safety points before you leave the lodge. No previous snowmobile experience is needed. From here, the old postal road, once the actual mail route between Gargia and the interior, carries you out through the forest and towards the Beskades range and the open plateau beyond it.

Tour Highlights
What the Ride Is Actually Like
The first stretch runs through snow-covered pine forest, trees close on both sides of the trail. As the route climbs towards Beskades, the forest thins, then stops. What's left is Finnmarksvidda: open, treeless, and running to the horizon in every direction. There's a real difference between reading that a plateau is large and sitting on a snowmobile at its edge with nothing between you and the skyline. That's the one moment this tour is built to deliver, and it happens roughly at the far point of the two-hour ride.
Driving Requirements
Guests ride in pairs, one driver and one passenger, and can swap seats during the trip. To drive, you need a valid car licence (class B) - Norway's minimum age for that licence is 18, so anyone younger rides as a passenger only. The tour's stated minimum age of 8 applies to passengers. A single-driver option is available for NOK 990 per person if you'd rather not share.
Your Ride, Start to Finish
Getting to Gargia
Meet at Canyon Hotel in Alta, or go straight to Gargia Lodge. The included transfer covers the first leg either way.
Learning the controls
At Gargia, your guide runs through the safety briefing and hands-on instruction. Licences get checked here too.
Into the forest
The old postal road takes you through snow-covered pine forest, climbing gradually towards Beskades. This part of the ride is roughly half the two hours of driving.
Onto the plateau
The forest opens into Finnmarksvidda. You're on the edge of Norway's largest plateau, with mountains, snow, and sky replacing the tree line. This is the second half of the ride, and where most people stop to take it in.
Warming up
Warm drinks and snacks are included through the trip, and the full gear list, thermal suit, gloves, winter boots, and helmet, is provided at Gargia.
Good to Know Before You Book
When and Where
Runs September through March. Meet at Canyon Hotel, Markedsgata 6, 9510 Alta, 15 minutes before departure. Groups run 2 to 16 participants, with larger groups available on request at separate pricing.
What's Included
Tour by car or minibus, professional guide, local history, warm beverages and snacks. A thermal suit is available to borrow, though guests should still arrive dressed for Arctic cold. The vehicle itself is fitted with 4WD and studded winter tyres specifically so the route can change with the weather through the evening.
Guest Requirements
Rated Easy. Most of the evening is spent in the vehicle, with short stretches outside at each viewing stop, so guests should dress for standing in Arctic cold rather than for physical exertion. The minimum age is 5, with a child rate up to age 12.
Weather and Sightings
The route adjusts through the evening as conditions change. Like any northern lights tour, sightings depend on solar activity lining up with clear sky, so they can't be promised for a specific night; what's certain either way is four hours on the plateau, a knowledgeable guide, and warm drinks along the route.
Payment and Cancellation
- Cancellation 60 days or more before your start date: full refund of your total booking value.
- Cancellation between 45 and 59 days before your start date: 75% refund of your total booking value.
- Cancellation between 30 and 44 days before your start date: 50% refund of your total booking value.
