Discover the Northern Lights and Huskies of Alta
Alta is known across Norway as the City of Northern Lights, and for good reason. The polar night here brings long hours of darkness through the winter months, and clear, dry conditions above the Finnmarksvidda plateau give some of the country's best odds of seeing the aurora borealis dance overhead. Pair that with an evening at a working husky kennel, and you get two of Arctic Norway's biggest draws in one outing, without needing to book them separately.
This Aurora Husky Visit brings both together at Gargia Lodge, thirty minutes outside Alta. You spend the evening with around 40 working huskies, sit down to a warm dinner, and step back outside once darkness has properly set in to watch the sky. No previous experience with dogs or aurora-hunting is needed, and there's no dog-sledding involved, which makes it a relaxed choice for couples, friends, and solo travellers rather than a physical activity.
It also suits families and mixed-ability groups: a child rate applies for guests up to 12 years old, and because there's no mushing, grandparents and less active travellers can join alongside more adventurous companions. If your priority is genuinely trying to see the Northern Lights in Alta, Gargia Lodge's dark, low-light-pollution setting gives you good odds, with the huskies and dinner happening either way if the aurora doesn't appear.

Tour Highlights
Discover Garcia Lodge
Gargia Lodge sits roughly thirty minutes from Alta, right on the edge of the Finnmarksvidda plateau, one of Norway's largest stretches of Arctic wilderness. Leaving the city means leaving its lights behind too, and that darkness is exactly what makes Gargia a genuinely good spot to watch for the Northern Lights, rather than just a scenic backdrop for the huskies.
A Husky Visit
This is a husky visit, not a dog-sledding tour, and that distinction matters. You won't be mushing a team through the snow. Instead, you spend time in the dogyard with around 40 Arctic working dogs, get close enough to interact with the friendly ones, and hear from your guide how they're trained and cared for through an Alta winter. It's the huskies and the culture around them, without the physical task of driving a sled.
Alta's Northern Lights Season
The evening runs four hours, with departures from November through April, Alta's main season for aurora and dark-sky viewing. Guests meet at Canyon Hotel fifteen minutes before departure, or head straight to Gargia Lodge for the same start time.
What Makes This Alta Husky Experience Different
No prior experience is needed, and there's no driving licence requirement, since nobody handles a sled. That makes it a genuinely different Northern Lights experience in Alta: built around time with the dogs and a proper sit-down dinner, rather than the physical demands of a sledding tour. The aurora is never guaranteed, but the huskies and dinner happen regardless of what the sky does.
Your Evening at Gargia Lodge
Meeting the Huskies at the Alta Dogyard
You arrive at the dogyard and meet the huskies. Get close to the dogs, take photos, and hear from your guide how the kennel runs day to day. Young children should stay close to a parent or guardian around the dogyard, as with any visit to working animals. Afterwards, everyone heads inside the lodge for a warm dinner and local history.
Watching for the Northern Lights at Gargia Lodge
Once dinner is finished, you go back outside. Away from the lights of Alta, Gargia Lodge gives a genuinely dark sky. If the aurora appears, you'll see it move in green and purple overhead. It can't be guaranteed, but the rest of the evening happens regardless.

Still Have Questions?
No. The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, are a natural phenomenon that depends on weather and solar activity, so sightings can never be guaranteed on any tour in Alta or elsewhere in Arctic Norway. What is guaranteed is the rest of the evening: the husky visit, the dinner, and the guided time at Gargia Lodge all go ahead regardless of whether the sky cooperates.
You'll meet around 40 Arctic working dogs in the dogyard at Gargia Lodge. These are real working huskies used for winter activities around Alta, not a small display kennel, so you'll see a genuine range of personalities. You can get close to the friendly dogs, cuddle them, and take photos throughout the visit.
It's a husky visit rather than a dog-sledding tour. Unlike a mushing experience, there's no team to drive and no sled to control, so no previous dog-sledding experience, fitness level, or driving licence is required. You spend the time in the dogyard and at the lodge instead, which makes it a more relaxed way to experience Alta's husky culture.
No. The Medium difficulty rating here reflects time spent outdoors in Arctic evening and night conditions, not physical exertion. Unlike a dog-sledding tour, where guests often help push the sled uphill, there's nothing to drive or control on this visit, so it suits mixed-ability groups, older travellers, and anyone who wants an Arctic evening without a physical challenge.
Your guide walks you through how the dogs are trained, fed, and looked after across an Alta winter, including how they're prepared for the cold and the work they do. This is a working kennel, not a petting-zoo setup, so the care and training side is a genuine part of the evening, not just a photo opportunity.
Yes. A warm dinner is included, along with warm beverages and snacks, as part of the evening at Gargia Lodge. It's served after the dogyard visit and before you head back outside for the Northern Lights watch, giving you a chance to warm up in the middle of the evening.
The tour starts at Canyon Hotel in downtown Alta, or at Gargia Lodge directly if you'd rather meet there. Gargia Lodge sits around thirty minutes outside Alta, on the edge of the Finnmarksvidda plateau, and other pickup points around the city can be arranged on request.
Dress in warm layers: thermal base layers, a warm mid layer, a windproof outer shell, plus gloves, a hat, and sturdy winter boots suited to Arctic conditions. You'll spend time outdoors twice during the evening, once at the dogyard and once for the aurora watch, so warm, weather-appropriate clothing matters more here than on an indoor evening out.
Yes, with a child rate available for guests up to 12 years old. Since there's no dog-sledding or physical activity involved, it works well as a family evening in Alta, though young children should stay close to a parent or guardian around the working dogs, as with any visit to animals of this size.
The tour is rated Medium, which reflects the time spent outdoors in Arctic winter conditions rather than any physical activity. There's no sledding, mushing, or driving involved, so guests mainly need to be prepared for the cold rather than for exertion.
