The Easy Entry Point Into Alta's Snowshoe Lineup

Discover the relaxed option among Outdoor Norway's Alta snowshoe adventures. While our Northern Lights Snowshoe Adventure adds an aurora-focused evening element and the Snowshoe Adventure to the Frozen Waterfall tackles a longer, more demanding route, this experience keeps things simple: a peaceful forest walk to a mountain viewpoint, with no previous experience required.

This trip was made for families, first-time snowshoers and anyone who wants to experience the Arctic winter landscape without taking on a more physically demanding route.

What Slowing Down

What Slowing Down Actually Gets You

Snowshoes spread your weight so you can cross snow that would otherwise be hard going, but the real point of this tour is the pace, not the equipment. You walk through the forest around Gargia at a speed that leaves room to actually notice it: snow settling off branches, the particular quiet of a place with no road noise. The route climbs gradually until the trees thin into open mountain terrain, and the viewpoint at the top gives you a sense of scale that's hard to get from a moving vehicle.

Canyon Hotel β†’ Gargia Lodge

Meet at Canyon Hotel in Alta for transport to Gargia Lodge, or make your own way there and meet the group directly. Your guide will provide snowshoes and any borrowed equipment, explain the essentials, and get everyone ready before setting off.

From Gargia Lodge, follow a gentle trail through the snow-covered forest at an easy, unhurried pace. The route leads to a forest clearing and bonfire, where you'll sit by the fire, warm up with a hot drink, and watch the sky for the Northern Lights when conditions allow. Afterwards, walk back through the forest with your guide, with the experience continuing whether or not the aurora appears.

Questions Before You Book

Do I need previous snowshoeing experience for this tour?

No. This tour is designed to be accessible to complete beginners, and you don't need any previous snowshoeing experience.

Before setting off, your guide will help you with your snowshoes and poles and explain the basic technique. The group then moves at a comfortable pace so you'll have time to get used to walking on snowshoes.

Is snowshoeing difficult for beginners?

Snowshoeing takes a little getting used to, but you don't need any special skills or previous experience for this tour. Snowshoes distribute your weight across the snow, allowing you to walk across winter terrain that would otherwise be much harder to cross on foot.

Your guide will show you the basics before you begin, and the route is rated Easy.

How physically demanding is this snowshoe tour?

The experience is rated Easy, with the pace focused on comfort rather than covering as much distance as possible.

There is a gradual climb as you move from the forest towards the mountain viewpoint, but this is designed as the most accessible of Outdoor Norway's snowshoe adventures around Alta.

Is this Norway snowshoeing tour suitable for children?

Yes. The minimum age is 5 years old, making this a good option for families looking for an active but approachable winter experience.

The relaxed pace and beginner-friendly route make it considerably more accessible than the longer and more demanding Frozen Waterfall snowshoe adventure.

Is this a good snowshoeing tour for families?

Yes. This tour is specifically suited to families and groups with different levels of outdoor experience.

There's no previous snowshoeing experience required, the difficulty is rated Easy, and children can join from age 5.

How is this different from the other snowshoe tours in Alta, Norway?

This is the easiest and most beginner-friendly of the three snowshoe experiences.

The Northern Lights Snowshoe Adventure combines snowshoeing with an evening outdoors and the possibility of seeing the Aurora, while the Snowshoe Adventure to the Frozen Waterfall is a longer, more physically demanding experience rated Hard.

Choose this tour if you're looking for a relaxed introduction to snowshoeing rather than a more challenging winter adventure.

What equipment is provided?

Snowshoes and poles are provided, along with a thermal suit and winter boots.

You should still arrive wearing warm layers suitable for Arctic winter conditions underneath the provided outer equipment.

What should I wear for snowshoeing in Norway?

Dress in warm, comfortable layers that allow you to move easily. Conditions can change during the walk, so wearing several layers makes it easier to adjust as you warm up or cool down.

A thermal suit and winter boots are provided as part of the tour.

Where does the snowshoeing route go?

The route takes you through the snow-covered forest surrounding Gargia before gradually climbing towards more open mountain terrain.

The destination is a quiet viewpoint overlooking the surrounding winter landscape before you make your way back.

How long does the snowshoe tour last?

That includes the transfer, getting ready and learning the basic snowshoeing technique, the guided walk itself, and time for warm beverages and snacks.

When can I go snowshoeing in Alta?

The exact experience can naturally vary throughout the season depending on snowfall and weather.

Where does the tour start?

The standard meeting point is Canyon Hotel, Markedsgata 6, 9510 Alta, where guests should arrive 15 minutes before departure.

Yes. Transfer is included with the tour.

The standard meeting point is Canyon Hotel in Alta, or you can meet directly at Gargia Lodge.

How many people can join?

The tour accommodates between 2 and 16 participants.

Will I be warm enough?

A thermal suit and winter boots are included, but you should still arrive dressed in warm layers appropriate for winter in Northern Norway.

Layering is particularly useful for snowshoeing because you'll naturally warm up while walking and may want to adjust your clothing along the way.

Are drinks and snacks included?

Yes. Warm beverages and snacks are included as part of the experience.

What happens if the weather changes?

Winter weather in Northern Norway can change quickly, so your guide may adjust the route when necessary based on conditions on the day.

What's the cancellation policy?

For bookings of up to 9 guests, cancellations made 10 or more days before departure receive a full refund. Cancellations made 4–9 days before departure receive a 50% refund, while cancellations within 4 days of departure are non-refundable.

Groups of 10 or more follow a separate cancellation schedule outlined in the Terms and Conditions.

Should I tip my guide?

Tipping isn't customary or expected in Norway. If you've particularly enjoyed your experience and would like to tip your guide, you're welcome to do so, but it's entirely optional.
