Tour Highlights
Why Autumn Is One of the Best Times to Visit Fjord Norway
Autumn is one of the most rewarding times to experience the Norway fjords. Around Voss and Western Norway, forests begin turning gold and orange, the mountains take on a completely different character, and the fjords feel noticeably calmer after the busiest weeks of summer.
With departures through September and into early October, this trip is designed to make the most of autumn in Norway: colourful landscapes with outdoor adventures that are still very much part of the season. Instead of simply looking at the fjords, you’ll experience them alongside mountain trails, rivers and some of the region’s most memorable scenery.
Who Is This Norway Autumn Getaway For?
This 3-day adventure is ideal for travellers who want to experience the autumn fjords of Norway without committing to a long multi-day expedition.
It works particularly well for couples, solo travellers and groups of friends looking for an active short break, or for anyone adding a few adventure-filled days to a longer Norway or Scandinavia itinerary. With accommodation, transport, activities and local guides brought together for you, it’s an easy way to fit a lot of Fjord Norway into a relatively short stay.
What Makes This Autumn Fjord Norway Getaway Unique?
What makes this getaway completely unique in the Norway trip scene is the variety.
Across three days, you’ll experience Nærøyfjord and Viking Valley, explore the trails around Voss by e-mountain bike, and finish on the Raundal River with a whitewater rafting adventure.
Rather than rushing between viewpoints, the trip gives you 3 different ways to experience Norway’s autumn fjords and landscapes: from the water, from the trails and from right in the middle of the mountains. It’s a compact adventure, but one that shows off several very different sides of Western Norway.
Why Voss Is the Perfect Base for an Autumn Fjord Tour
Voss puts you right in the middle of some of Western Norway’s best outdoor terrain, with fjords, mountains, rivers and waterfalls all within reach.
In autumn, that location becomes even more special. The forests begin changing colour, the mountains frame the valleys around town, and you’re well positioned to explore places such as Nærøyfjord while still having access to activities around Voss itself. With local guides and the logistics organised for you, it makes an ideal base for experiencing Fjord Norway in autumn.
The adventure, day by day
Day 1 – The Majestic Nærøyfjord & Viking Village
Your autumn adventure begins with a scenic drive towards Nærøyfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed landscape and one of the most spectacular fjords in Norway. Surrounded by steep mountains, waterfalls and changing autumn colours, it's a pretty unforgettable introduction to the Norway fjords in autumn.
From the fjord, step back a thousand years with a visit to Viking Valley, where you'll meet the people of Njardarheim and get a closer look at Viking history and everyday life. Discover traditional boats, crafts, cuisine and religion, and learn more about the skills, customs and traditions that shaped the Viking Age.
It's a day that combines two very different sides of Western Norway: the huge natural landscapes of the fjords and the stories of the people who once called them home.
Day 2 - Thrilling Rapids
There's no quiet finish to this trip.
Your final day takes you onto the Raundal River for a rafting adventure through the landscapes around Voss. Navigate exciting rapids with your guide, take in the scenery from the river and, along the way, enjoy the chance for a refreshing dip beneath a waterfall.
After two days exploring the mountains and autumn fjords of Norway, it's a completely different way to experience the landscape — from right in the middle of it.
And it's a fitting end to three days in Fjord Norway: fjords, Viking history, autumn trails, mountain scenery and one final hit of whitewater.
Day 3 – Trail riding & Blueberry Picking
Day two picks up the pace. After gearing up at our base in Voss, you'll head out on a full-suspension e-mountain bike to explore the area's forest trails and mountain scenery.
Autumn in Norway brings a completely different atmosphere to the trails around Voss. Forests begin to change colour, the surrounding mountains frame the ride, and wild blueberries can still be found along the way. We'll take time to enjoy the scenery and stop to pick some berries (maybe even a few chanterelles) as we ride.
With an e-MTB helping on the climbs, you can focus on the trails, the views and simply being outside during one of the most colourful times of year in Fjord Norway.

September is right at the heart of this trip's season, with departures running throughout the month and into early October.
For travellers interested in experiencing autumn in Norway, September is the opportunity to see the landscape as the season begins to change while still getting outside for activities such as mountain biking and rafting.
As always in Western Norway, conditions can vary, so arriving prepared for changing weather is part of the experience.
The itinerary combines three very different ways of experiencing Fjord Norway.
You'll visit Nærøyfjord and Viking Valley on the first day, explore the trails around Voss by full-suspension e-mountain bike on the second, and finish with whitewater rafting on the Raundal River.
That combination means the trip isn't only about seeing the autumn fjords of Norway. You'll experience the region from the road, trails and river, with local history included along the way.
For the active portions of the trip, it's best to bring clothing that lets you adapt to changing conditions.
For rafting, bring swimwear to wear beneath your wetsuit, a towel, extra clothes for afterwards, sunscreen and thermal underwear for colder conditions.
For mountain biking, comfortable biking clothes are recommended, along with thermal underwear when needed, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, enough water and a windproof or rain jacket. You can also bring your own pedals or saddle if you prefer.
The main thing is to come prepared for the changeable conditions that can be part of Norway in autumn.
FULL LIST:
For rafting:
- Swimwear (to wear under the wetsuit)
- Thermal underwear (if cold)
- Extra clothes for changing after the trip
- Towel
- Sunscreen
Regarding weather conditions:
Whitewater rafting is fantastic whether it's sunny or rainy!
For mountain biking:
- Clothing suitable for biking, focus on comfort
- Thermal underwear (for colder conditions)
- Own gloves (for comfort or warmth)
- Windstopper jacket or rain jacket (for windy or cold weather)
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Enough water for the tour
Optional:
- Own pedals or saddle
The mountain biking is graded across skill levels 1–4 and is suitable for beginner and intermediate riders.
You'll be riding a full-suspension e-mountain bike, so you get assistance from the bike while exploring the trails and autumn scenery around Voss.
No, you don't need any prior experience at all.
The majority of our guests on this 3-day Autumn tour of Fjord Norway are first-timers, and everything—from our trips to our equipment and briefings—is tailored to make beginners feel comfortable. Our seasoned guides will give you a safety orientation before hitting the water and will be there to guide and coach you through every rapid.
No previous whitewater experience is required, we've got you covered!
Yes. The mountain bike is included as part of the tour, so there's no need to travel to Norway with your own bike.
Yes, absolutely!
Our mountain bikes are equipped with standard flat pedals featuring pins. However, we also offer clip-in SPD and Crankbrothers pedals for those who prefer using clip-in shoes.
If you wish to utilize your own pedals and/or saddle, kindly bring them along, and upon your arrival, we'll happily replace them for you.
To ensure we accommodate your preferences smoothly, please notify us in advance by replying to your booking confirmation email. This way, we can prepare accordingly for your visit.
For everyone joining us on a rafting adventure, we suggest being in good physical shape.
If you have any medical concerns but still want to join the rafting trip, it's always wise to consult with your doctor beforehand. Your safety and well-being are our top priorities.
Our primary goal is for everyone to stay safely in the boat, but surprisingly, some actually enjoy the thrill of going overboard. It can be initially disorienting, yet exhilarating. Many people have taken multiple trips and never fallen in, while some experience it on their first outing. It's all part of the river rafting experience.
Before entering the river, you'll receive thorough guidance on handling an unexpected dip and how to navigate the water confidently. By following your guide's instructions, your unexpected 'swim' might just become the highlight of your adventure—a tale to share with friends later on!
Tipping isn't customary in Norway, as it is e.g. in the USA. Our guides put in considerable effort to ensure your experience is both enjoyable and safe, maintaining the high standards set by Outdoor Norway.
While tipping is recognized as a standard practice in the industry and is always welcomed, it's never an obligation. It's entirely up to your discretion whether you choose to leave a tip. Your appreciation for the service provided is greatly valued either way.
Yes absolutely, that's not an issue at all.
We have shelves available for storing your belongings while you're out on a tour. Rest assured, there's always a member of our staff present at the base, so your items will be securely looked after— nothing goes missing on our watch!
Yes.
Upon joining any activity, a waiver acknowledging risks must be read and signed. For minors, a parent or guardian is required to sign the waiver.
