Best Time to Visit Bergen, Norway: A Year-Round Guide

Discover the best time to visit Bergen, Norway, with our seasonal guide to weather, fjord tours, hiking, crowds, and what to expect each month.

Written by: Marcio Franco

Let's not overcomplicate this:
we think that the best time to visit Bergen, Norway, is June to August for a first trip where you’ll likely combine sightseeing, fjord excursions and outdoor activities.

May is worth considering if you like spring scenery, and September is always a good crowd-free alternative. Winter in Bergen is built for a different kind of holiday: cafés, cultural attractions and a chance to take on some snowy adventures in the surrounding region.

As always, your ideal dates depend on what you want to do. A weekend exploring Bryggen calls for different planning than a holiday built around mountain hikes or kayaking. Bergen’s coastal climate also means that mild weather and rain can arrive in the same afternoon, whatever the season.

Here’s how to choose a time that fits your trip!

Our #1 tip? Choose your must-do experience first, and plan from that. If a particular hike, kayaking trip or winter activity is the reason you’re travelling, its operating season should guide your booking.

If you're planning your first visit, explore our guide to things to do in Bergen, Norway to help you decide which attractions and experiences deserve a place in your itinerary.

Best time to visit Bergen, Norway in the spring

Spring suits travellers who want to see Bergen becoming greener, spend time exploring the city and leave room for excursions when conditions allow. However, coming in March and May are quite different experiences.

May is our recommendation for a spring visit focused on sightseeing. Earlier in the season, plan a mix of indoor and outdoor activities, and keep mountain ambitions flexible. Spring conditions in the city don’t necessarily mean snow-free trails higher up.

Bergen in March

Tourists walking around Bergen, Norway on a rainy day

March is a transition month. You can plan walks around Bryggen and the city centre, but leave space for cafés, museums and galleries if the weather turns.

For a short break, avoid building the whole itinerary around the mountains. Instead, use a favourable forecast to choose your sightseeing window and keep an indoor alternative ready.

March can also suit a holiday combining Bergen with winter activities near Voss, subject to snow conditions and available departures. Check the mountain activity first, then arrange your city stay around it.

Best choice for: a flexible city break with the possibility of adding a mountain winter experience.

Bergen in April

An April visit means more daylight for exploring, so it’s a useful option if you want to spend longer outside without committing to a summer trip.

Build your itinerary around the city, with excursions added according to availability. You might explore the waterfront and neighbourhoods one day, then take a fjord trip or visit a viewpoint the next.

If your dates fall around Easter, check opening hours and transport schedules before arrival. Don’t assume that shops, restaurants and attractions will follow their usual timetable.

For hiking, choose routes based on current conditions. Lower paths may be suitable while higher terrain still requires winter equipment and experience.

Best choice for: city sightseeing, flexible excursions and travellers happy to adapt their plans.

Bergen in May

May is a strong choice for a spring visit to Bergen. Flowers and returning greenery make the parks and streets particularly appealing (hello, cherry blossoms!), with longer days for extra time to explore.

Norway’s Constitution Day on 17 May means great celebrations in the city! Visit then if the occasion is part of the appeal, but plan accommodation and meals ahead since it gets rather crowded.

If you’re going for an outdoor holiday, check your preferred tour’s calendar before booking flights. May can be a good starting point for planning, but seasonal activities don’t all begin on the same date.

Best choice for: spring scenery, city walks and experiencing Bergen before the main summer holiday period.

Best time to visit Bergen, Norway in the summer

June to August is our recommended period for a first summer visit to Bergen.

Because of mild conditions and a broad choice of summer excursions, it’s much easier to build a varied itinerary. Everyone else thinks like that as well, though, so book popular experiences ahead, especially when your dates are fixed.

Go for June if long evenings are a priority. July is good for a classic summer holiday, and August remains worth considering for a trip extending towards early autumn. Bergen is rainy year-round (we average around 220 rainy days a year!) so bring waterproof clothing whichever month you choose.

Bergen in June

Crowded streets in the early summer in Bergen, potentially the best time to visit Norway

June is our suggested starting point for anyone who wants a balanced first visit. The long days give you room to combine city sightseeing with time outdoors without rushing every stop.

You could spend a day around Bryggen, the harbour and Bergen’s most scenic neighbourhoods, then dedicate another day to a fjord excursion. For ideas beyond the city, browse our guide to the best day trips from Bergen and choose an excursion that suits your travel dates.

If outdoor activities are a priority, add time in Voss rather than squeezing everything into a single day trip. It’s very easy to get from Bergen to Voss, after all.

Our big tip? Keep some flexibility in your schedule. A bright evening can be a good opportunity for a viewpoint, a wetter afternoon may suit a museum visit or a longer lunch.

Best for: first-time visitors, long evenings and a city-and-nature itinerary.

Bergen in July

July works well for a summer holiday that includes Bergen as part of a wider journey through Norway. Give yourself time to enjoy the city rather than treating it only as the departure point for your next excursion.

If you have a particular fjord trip or guided activity in mind, reserve it early. Once those bookings are in place, arrange your other sightseeing around them.

Pack for changing conditions rather than heat alone. Comfortable walking shoes, a waterproof jacket and an extra layer remain useful even on a summer trip.

Best for: a classic summer holiday with sightseeing, fjords and organised activities.

Bergen in August

August is another good option for combining Bergen with outdoor experiences. Approach it much as you would July: secure the activities that matter most, then leave some freedom around your city days.

If your holiday runs into September, check the full itinerary against departure calendars. A tour available at the beginning of your trip may follow a different schedule later on.

For a longer visit, consider splitting your stay between Bergen and Voss. This gives you more time for activities and reduces the need to travel back to the city after every excursion.

Best choice for: summer sightseeing and a longer holiday exploring Western Norway.

Best time to visit Bergen, Norway in the autumn

September is our first suggestion for an autumn trip with an outdoor focus. As the season progresses, shift the balance towards city experiences, with excursions fitted around suitable conditions.

Autumn usually means cooler weather and more frequent precipitation than the late spring and summer period. A flexible itinerary and suitable clothing matter more than trying to find a month with guaranteed clear skies.

Bergen in September

September is worth considering if you want an early autumn holiday rather than a summer visit. Start by checking whether your preferred guided activities are running, then choose dates that work for the experiences you want.

Give yourself plenty of time for both the city and the surrounding region. Our most common suggestion to our visitors is that they try to combine neighbourhood walks, restaurants and cultural attractions with a fjord excursion or an outdoor day near Voss.

Don’t choose September solely on the assumption that it will be quiet or inexpensive. Compare accommodation for your actual dates and check for events before booking.

Best choice for: an early autumn break with a mix of sightseeing and outdoor plans.

Bergen in October

October is ideal for you if you enjoy the autumn - and are comfortable letting the forecast influence your schedule.

Keep your outdoor plans manageable. Rather than committing every day to a long excursion, combine shorter outings with galleries, museums and time exploring Bergen’s food scene.

For viewpoints, give yourself more than one opportunity during the trip. If visibility is poor on your first day, having another opening in the itinerary can make the difference.

Check individual activity calendars carefully, particularly if kayaking, biking or a guided hike is central to your visit.

Best choice for: autumn atmosphere, photography and a flexible city break.

Bergen in November

A rainy autumn day in Bergen, Norway

November is a month to choose for the city itself! Build your visit around restaurants, museums, cafés and neighbourhood exploring, with outdoor sightseeing added when conditions suit.

Keep expectations for a packed outdoor itinerary modest. The days are much shorter now, so it’s useful to group nearby sights together and avoid spending your limited sightseeing time travelling between distant stops.

If you’re hoping to catch the beginning of the festive season, check that year’s event dates before booking. Don’t assume Christmas attractions will be open throughout November.

Best choice for: food, culture and a city break with a relaxed schedule.

Best time to visit Bergen, Norway in the winter

The best winter month depends on what you want from the trip. Choose December for a festive city break, or step into January and February if you’re up for skiing & other snowy delights.

Keep your expectations for snow realistic. Bergen has a maritime climate. The city centre may have rain or temporary snow cover, but conditions in the surrounding mountains can be quite different.

Bergen in December

December in Bergen, Norway, darker weather and start of Christmas season

December suits a trip built around festive atmosphere, food and time exploring the city at an unhurried pace.

Use the daylight for waterfront walks and viewpoints when conditions allow, then save indoor attractions and meals for later. Check the dates and opening hours of any Christmas experiences you want to include.

If you’re travelling over Christmas itself, confirm restaurant reservations, attraction hours and transport arrangements well, and we do mean well, in advance. A holiday visit needs more preparation than an ordinary weekend.

For more ideas, read our guide to Bergen in winter.

Best for: Christmas atmosphere and a short seasonal city break.

Bergen in January

January works best when you arrive with a clear idea of the holiday you want. Plan a city stay focused on food and culture, or use Bergen as one part of a wider winter itinerary.

Keep outdoor sightseeing compact and make use of suitable weather windows. There’s no need to fill every hour: a few well-chosen experiences can make a more enjoyable trip than a schedule designed for summer daylight.

If skiing is part of your winter plans, discover why Voss is a popular skiing destination near Bergen before choosing where to spend your time.

Best choice for: a city-and-mountain winter holiday with activities arranged ahead.

Bergen in February

February is worth considering for a winter trip that combines Bergen with time outdoors in the surrounding region.

You could spend part of the holiday exploring the city, then head towards Voss for a guided winter experience. Our snowshoe tour near Voss is one option to investigate, with available dates and conditions guiding your plans.

Check the forecast and equipment advice for the activity’s meeting point rather than relying on conditions in central Bergen. Pack for both parts of the trip: wet city streets and a mountain outing can require different footwear and layers.

Best for: combining Bergen’s cultural attractions with an organised winter adventure.

Best time to visit Bergen, Norway for outdoor activities

If getting outdoors is the main reason for your visit, choose the experience before you choose the month.

Fjord trips and kayaking

A kayaking tour in the Fjords of Norway

Summer is the straightforward starting point for a holiday with several fjord experiences. Some sightseeing cruises also operate in winter, so a summer visit isn’t your only opportunity to get out on the water.

A cruise and a guided kayaking trip have different requirements, however. Check the specific departure calendar, meeting point and transport arrangements rather than assuming that all fjord activities share one season.

For a closer experience of the landscape, consider our guided kayaking tour on Nærøyfjord. Paddling gives this part of your holiday a different pace from sightseeing by boat.

Hiking in Bergen and the surrounding mountains

Plan around the route you want to walk. A short outing on a lower trail and a full mountain day need different conditions, equipment and experience.

For a trip built around hiking, start by comparing summer dates, then check whether your chosen routes are suitable. Snow, wind, visibility and recent rain matter more than a calendar label.

Our guide to hiking in Bergen can help you narrow down the options before deciding when to travel.

Rafting and mountain biking near Voss

If you want an active day beyond Bergen, include Voss in your planning from the outset.

Our whitewater rafting tour in Voss takes you onto the Raundal River for a guided experience through Grade 3 rapids. Check the booking calendar for your travel dates rather than assuming daily availability.

Apply the same approach to biking: choose a tour that matches your experience, confirm availability and leave enough time for the journey.

Skiing and snowshoeing

For a winter activity holiday, make the mountain experience the anchor booking. Confirm the activity and dates first, then arrange your Bergen stay around it.

This also helps you avoid a common planning mistake: assuming that the weather forecast for central Bergen describes conditions at a mountain meeting point.

When should you visit Bergen for fewer crowds or better value?

A tourist enjoying the vistas of the Bryggen UNESCO area in Bergen, Norway

If your dates are flexible, compare May, September and dates outside the main summer period. Treat them as alternatives to investigate rather than guaranteed bargains.

Look at the total trip cost. A cheaper room is less useful if your preferred activity isn’t operating or the available transport requires an extra overnight stay.

Before booking, compare:

  • Accommodation across several possible dates.
  • Events and public holidays during your stay.
  • Tour availability and departure times.
  • Transport connections for excursions beyond Bergen.

If a particular experience matters most, spending a little more to travel when it is available may be better value than choosing the lowest hotel rate.

Planning your Bergen trip around the weather

Give yourself some flexibility. If possible, keep a museum or indoor attraction interchangeable with a viewpoint or walking day.

Pack waterproof outerwear, comfortable shoes with grip and layers you can add or remove. Before a mountain outing, check the forecast for the route itself and follow your guide’s equipment advice.

For detailed seasonal temperatures and rainfall information, read our Bergen weather by month guide. Use climate averages to help choose your travel period, then use the forecast to plan the days themselves.
