Skiing in Voss: Top Norway Skiing Resorts for All Levels
7:37

Voss is just over an hour from Bergen by direct train, which makes it one of the most accessible ski resorts near Bergen for a weekend trip or a full winter break. Whether you're flying into Vestland county and heading straight to the slopes, or escaping the city for a few days, Voss is the practical choice.

The real magic of Voss, though, is how much it packs into one place. You’ll find well-kept slopes for beginners, steeper terrain for thrill seekers, and miles of snow-covered wilderness perfect for cross-country skiers. You’ve got a destination that combines fun and ease in equal measure.

Voss Resort: The Heart of Skiing in Voss

If you’re new to skiing in Norway, Voss Resort is the perfect place to start. It’s the largest ski resort in Western Norway and sits just minutes from Voss town center (thanks to the gondola that connects the two). This means you can have breakfast in your hotel and be on the slopes 15 minutes later.

The resort itself has over 40 km of ski runs, including green slopes for kids and first-timers, flowing blues for intermediates, and technical reds and blacks for experienced skiers. And 18 km of cross-country trails. There’s also a terrain park and designated kids' area, plus night skiing if you want to squeeze in a few extra laps under the stars.

Local tip: Take a moment to enjoy the panoramic viewing platform before hitting the slopes. It’s a great spot for photos, and on clear days, you can see all the way across the valley and deep into the fjords.

Myrkdalen Ski Resort: A Snow-Sure Option for Winter Lovers

Looking for deep snow and fewer lift lines? Head to Myrkdalen, just 30 minutes from Voss. Thanks to its higher elevation, it gets reliable snowfall and often opens earlier than other Norway skiing resorts. It’s also a bit more off-the-radar, so you’ll enjoy wide-open slopes with fewer crowds.

This is a fantastic resort for beginners and families. The wide, gentle runs are ideal for learning and confidence-building. At the same time, more advanced skiers can head to off-piste zones or hit the freeride terrain for untracked powder. There are also terrain parks for snowboarders and freestyle skiers to test their skills.

Local tip: Book a room or cabin right on the slope for true ski-in, ski-out access. It makes early mornings a breeze.

Planning your trip? Outdoor Norway offers a 3-day Ski & Snowshoe Experience that includes guided adventures in both Voss Resort and Myrkdalen.

Off-Piste Skiing

For the Experts: Backcountry and Off-Piste Skiing

Beyond the resorts lies a wilder side of Voss, perfect for experienced skiers looking for steep lines, fresh powder, and untamed landscapes. Areas like Raundalen Valley and the high alpine peaks around Voss offer some of the most rewarding backcountry skiing in Norway.

This terrain isn’t marked or patrolled, so if you're not familiar with the area, we highly recommend booking a guided ski tour with Outdoor Norway. Our guides are avalanche-trained and intimately familiar with the snowpack, weather patterns, and safe routes so you can focus on the skiing and the epic views.

Safety tip: If you're heading off-piste, always carry avalanche safety gear and know how to use it. The mountains here are beautiful, but they demand respect.

Cross-Country Skiing

Voss and Cross-Country Skiing: A Relaxed Way to Explore the Region

Not all skiing has to be fast and steep. Cross-country skiing in Voss is a peaceful and beautiful way to explore the snowy landscape at your own pace. You’ll find trails that loop through quiet forests, alongside frozen lakes, and over mountain plateaus with postcard views.

Trailheads start near town and branch into the surrounding wilderness. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned Nordic skier, there’s something for you from short afternoon loops to long-distance adventures.

Local tip: Bring a thermos of hot chocolate, Kvikklunsj, Cinnamon Gifflar (classic Norwegian hiking snacks), baby carrots, trail mix, and stop at a mountain cabin along the way. They're a must!

Best Accommodation Options for Skiers

Whether you want convenience, charm, or a cabin in the woods, Voss has plenty of accommodation options for winter travelers.

You can stay right on the slopes at ski-in, ski-out hotels or book a lodge in Voss town to be close to restaurants, shops, and the gondola. For something more rustic, rent a mountain cabin; some come with wood stoves and big windows overlooking snowy landscapes.

If you’re a DNT member, you can also access a network of traditional Norwegian trekking cabins, many of which are open year-round. It's a unique way to combine skiing with cultural immersion.
